About | Scorching Bay

Snorkel, swim or enjoy a picnic at the beautiful Scorching Bay. A fantastic spot for the family, the pristine water is protected by the harbour and slopes gently into the ocean, it’s nice and clear and great for swimming. Bring out your snorkelling gear and see what you can find by the rocks.

Go on a scenic drive out here on a nice day and find lots of great spots to stop and go for a swim or relax by the beach. It’s a beautiful coast.

There’s a small playground for the kids and a big grassy area for the whole family to layout and enjoy a picnic. Watch as ferries, ships and boats enter and leave the harbour and take in beautiful views of the mountains on the other side.

If you didn’t bring a feed, the café, Scorch-o-rama, is just on the other side of the road and the best thing is, their outdoor seating area is located right by the beach and has a great outlook.

Go for a little explore along the rocks and don’t forget the fishing rod, this is a great spot for fishing.

Parking can fill up fast on sunny weekends so get here early.

There are toilets and changing rooms by the carpark, right by the beach. There’s also a freshwater shower available in the warmer months and closed in winter from 1 June – 31 August.

No dogs.

We came to Scorching Bay for a swim but ended up going for an explore first and found a great jumping off point that we had all to ourselves. The water was beautiful and clear, the kids had a grand time and it was a morning well spent before we headed off in search of lunch. Can definitely see us coming back for another swim when we’re next in Wellington!
