About | Mercer Bay Loop
Come check out the highest cliffs in Auckland on the Mercer Bay Loop! I love this track. Right by the water, watch the waves come in from way up high and breathe in the ocean breeze. You would never have guessed that there was once a Maori village here.
There are several benches along the way for you to stop and enjoy the view, or come just before the sun goes down to watch the sunset.
It takes about 45 minutes and is 1.6kms long. It’s a loop track, start at either end of the car park.

On the day we set out, the weather wasn’t that great, it was windy and there had been a few showers. We went to Piha Beach first, but because of the wind, we didn’t stay long and headed up to do this walk instead. We still weren’t sure if the rain was going to hold off or not but decided to go anyway and ended up having such a good time. There was a little shower but it didn’t bother us.
These are the highest cliffs in Auckland and they’re pretty impressive. I remember the first time I did the Mercer Bay Loop, I was blown away. Be careful around the cliff edges, they don’t all have barriers.
Munchies on the way.
The view of ‘Lion Rock’ at Piha Beach off in the distance. Called Lion Rock because it looks like the outline of a lion when sitting.
Don’t forget to use the stations before and after entering the track to help protect our native kauri trees.
The boys loved this! Pick a story, turn it, then listen to the soundtrack.
We really love coming here and taking in the amazing views it has to offer. It’s such a cool spot and perfect for families.
