About | Tongariro National Trout Centre
Come and learn about freshwater trout at the Tongariro National Trout Centre. Walk through the visitors centre and aquarium where you’ll discover more about trout fishing. See eels, small trout and a lot of other fish. Walk along the stream full of huge trout protected from fishermen, you’ll also have a chance of seeing them in the viewing chamber which is pretty cool! Give the kids a chance of catching a trout in the kids fishing pond (note: they only do the kids trout fishing in the school holidays), then walk along the Tongariro River which is renown for fly fishing, where you’ll probably spot someone trying their luck.
The Tongariro National Trout Centre let the kids have a go at trout fishing in the fishing pond which we thought would be absolutely amazing and a great experience. All gear and instructor included, but note that they only do this during the school holidays.
Children under 16 go free.
Open 7 days a week, 10am-4pm.

Walk outside
Outside we go, feed bags ready. As soon as we get closer to the stream, we catch sight of not a few but plenty of trout all swimming in the stream. We even saw a huge rat run/swim across the stream to the other side, it gave us such a huge fright!
It was pretty cool being able to see these guys underwater too. We would chuck the food over the top then watch them go crazy for it.
How we wished we had come during the holidays so that we could have had a go at trout fishing. Maybe next time!
As you walk across the river you might spot a few anglers trying their luck.
All in all, we really enjoyed visiting the Trout Centre, seeing and feeding the fish and learning a bit more about them. Totally worth the stop!
