About | Huka Falls Lookout
The Huka Falls Lookout, the most visited and photographed location in New Zealand, is where you’ll get to see the bright blue rushing waters of the Waikato River come rushing down the gorge and down an 11-metre waterfall. It’s an impressive sight!
The beautiful and mighty Waikato River, which is New Zealand’s longest, comes winding through the North Island with the river at 100 metres in length. When it reaches the volcanic gorge though – only 15 meters in length, the water is forced together and has to quickly squeeze through the small gap, creating quite the spectacle. It then comes thundering down an 11-metre waterfall, 220 litres of water per second, which is probably what you heard as you were parking the car. It is said that it can fill an Olympic swimming pool in just 11 seconds!
There are numerous viewing points on both sides of the waterfall with the bridge being the most popular so snag yourself a photo in front of the stunning blue water and then take it all in.
When you come to the last viewing platform, you might see the Huka Falls Jet come speeding in or the more comfortable and relaxing river cruise boat down below, both are great ways to see the falls up close.
Several walking and mountain biking tracks start from the Huka Falls and provide excellent opportunities to see the Waikato River. Head along the river to the Aratiatia Dam, go in the opposite direction to Spa Park (bring your togs and towel!) or check out the Waikato River Track.
When you’re finished up, go check out the Hipapatua Recreational Reserve next to the Huka Falls if you’re keen for a swim in the river but be aware of the current.
Gates close at 6pm, though you can still park outside after that and walk in.
Tip: the best time to come to the Huka Falls Lookout is early or late as this place (especially the bridge) can get packed during the day.

The Huka Falls Lookout is one of those places that never seems to get old and never fails to amaze me. The water is so blue and to see the water come tumbling down the waterfall is something you have to see.
