About | Secret Spot Hot Tubs Rotorua
Secret Spot Hot Tubs is the place to be after a day’s adventures. And with the Whakarewarewa Forest right at its doorstep, it’s easier than ever to get out there. Bring your bike or running shoes then reward yourself with your very own tub and let your muscles relax as you take nature in.
As soon as you walk in you can tell you’re in for quite the experience. Take a step outside and you’ll come across boarded paths nestled amongst native plantings. Cross the swing bridge and find shinny dips waiting to ease achy muscles, a large burning rock and the perfect place to chill out with friends and family. Keep going and find your very own hot tub, nicely surrounded by native tree ferns and plantings and on the edge of the forest. A little stream gently flows in front of the tubs and birds come and go, busy with their day. It’s quite the spot to unwind and you’ll easily find yourself falling in love with it all.
So go on and grab your beverage of choice from the reception area and make your way down to your very own hot tub. The tubs are nice and warm and set at a temperature depending on the day but sit at a nice 38 to 40oC (or cooler on hot days) so keep the kids and yourself hydrated with the chilled drinking water provided. If you’re looking for something a little more fancy, order some more drinks without even having to leave the tub with the pushing of a button.
Even if you don’t want a full-on soak after your adventure, grab your choice of beverage, a bite to eat or an ice cream and dip your feet into the mini cedar foot tubs, called Shinny Dips, perfect for tired legs. They’re free to use with any purchase so make sure you drop in, slip off your jandels and try them out.
Haven’t come prepared? No problem, swimwear and towels are available for hire.
Come at night for a romantic night out and find the place lit up and fires going.
Whether you’re looking for a nice soak or just want to grab a drink or a treat for the kids after working up a sweat on the forest trails, Secret Spot is the place to go!
Opening hours: 9am – 10pm
Located: at the Whakarewarewa Forest Mountain Biking car park.
When is the best time to go?
Right after an adventure on the trails! The perfect reward after working up a sweat. Secret Spot Hot Tubs is also great during any weather. Come at night to see the place lit up with lanterns. Or come outside peaks times (mornings are great) to enjoy some peace and quiet.
How many can fit into a tub?
The 6-foot (1.8m) wide hot tubs can easily fit 4 people or up to 6 if you don’t mind getting in close. With 12 tubs in total, Secret Spot can also accommodate big groups.

It was extremely foggy the morning we visited Secret Spot. It was cold and we were looking forward to hopping in and relaxing. It was first too hot to the touch and we had to slowly warm our bodies to the heat. Feet first, then adding in the legs and slowly slipping the whole body in. And it was pure bliss. Steam rose from the tub and all of our insides felt tingly and warm. We found our seat and looked out towards the forest and found birds chirping and the steam gently passing through. Coming mid-winter, a lot of the leaves from the trees had fallen.
Sipping on our hot drinks while taking in the view we pinched ourselves with how lucky we felt. And we honestly thought we’d hit jackpot. Sitting outside, in a nice warm hot tub, drink in hand, surrounded by nature. What more could we ask for.
There’s a big container for you to store your things, especially great for when it’s raining but also for when you’ve got kids that like to splash around a lot. The worst thing when hopping out is having a cold and soggy towel.
The kids actually heaved a huge sigh of relief upon hearing that they didn’t have to keep their heads above water. These boys love having fun, splashing, dunking their heads under, etc but with all of these geothermal places around recommending we don’t put our head under, it kind of took the fun out of it. And for kids, it’s all about having fun. Happy kids, happy life. Oh, and the water was a huge delight as well, did ya know it’s chemical-free?!
After enjoying such a lovely time here, Secret Spot has become one of those places we’ll return to again and again. There’s something special and unique about it and we know that when we’re back in Rotorua, this is one of those spots we’ll be very keen to re-visit.
