About | Kitekite Falls
Time: 1.5 hours to the base of the waterfall. (3.6km roundtrip)
If you’re visiting Piha Beach, you’ll want to add this to your day as well. The beautiful 40-metre high Kitekite Falls is along a well maintained, easy track with only a few inclines going to the base of the waterfall. As you walk, you’ll be mostly covered by the forest and the track goes along next to a lovely creek.
When you reach the falls you’ll need to do a bit of rock hopping to get across the stream to reach the base of the waterfall. You might see a few eels, our kids always love this and it’s always a highlight for them.
If you’re keen to see the top of the falls, it’s all uphill from there, though it’s well worth it. At the top, it’s rocky again so it’s best explored with shoes. It’s also a bit slippery in areas so be careful, we’ve slipped in a few times!
It’s also a great spot to go in for a dip but it is cold, even in summer. The most popular and photo-worthy spot is right at the last rock pool, where you’ll find your own natural infinity pool, views over a valley of the beautiful forest is amazing, you’ll never want to leave. Some of the rock pools are really deep and a bit hard to get to, especially for kids. Decide how far you want them to go and keep a close eye on them.

The waterfall is so beautiful and totally worth the visit if you’re heading out to Piha. This photo only shows part of the waterfall, there are six tiers to this waterfall.
Part of the appeal to this place for the boys was the eels. We’ve been here two times with the boys and every time they’ve come out to see them. I think the most we’ve seen is 4 or 5. The boys absolutely love them and are totally fascinated.
If you’ve still got the energy, keep going on up to the top of the Kitekite Falls where you’ll find a natural infinity pool at the edge (we didn’t let our kids this far, you’ll want to watch them carefully around here).
Though the water was really cold, we still jumped in and went for a swim. It was really refreshing and so nice being surrounded by a lush and natural setting. When we went, we had the place to ourselves (we took the cousins that time).
The track itself is really lovely and runs alongside the creek.
As always, the boys love to play while we do our walks.
And don’t forget to scrub and spray your shoes before you leave to protect our beautiful kauri trees.
