About | Manukau Heads Lighthouse
There are hardly any more lighthouses around where you are able to walk inside in New Zealand but the Manukau Heads Lighthouse is one of them! Walk the 120 steps to the lighthouse, which is more than 140 years old and enjoy the views over the Manukau Harbour and Waitakere Ranges. On a clear day, see if you can spot Mount Taranaki in the south. It also overlooks the spot where 190 lives were tragically lost during the HMS Orpheus wreck in 1863. You can read more about it on the information panel there.
It’s known to get windy out here so bring something warm. It’s free but donations to help with maintenance are welcomed.
Once you’re done checking out the fascinating Manukau Heads Lighthouse, go for a little walk in the field below the lighthouse and check out the views.
Facilities: toilets.
Gates are open 9am – 5pm.

There are a few picnic tables to enjoy some lunch or a little snack by the lighthouse.
We came after being at the beach, where Aston got his shoes wet. And because he didn’t have any shoes on he decided to walk on the sides which was easier on his feet, refusing to be carried. It’s more fun this way!
After seeing people walking in the field next to the lighthouse we decided to check go for a little look as well and I’m glad we did. The grass was nice and lush and the views of the harbour, amazing!
This is a great area to let the kids run around and let all of their energy out before heading the long drive home.
You can see the views of the harbour and over to Whatipu Beach.
