About | Ocean Beach, Whangarei
Ocean Beach is one of Whangarei’s best beaches. It’s great for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding and paddle boarding. There are lifeguards during the summer months. On a calm day put your snorkelling gear on and see if you can spot any fish.
At the northern end there is a big sand dune, great for sliding down. Don’t forget the boogie boards! And on the south, climb up over the headland and take in the amazing views of the little islands and the Pacific Ocean. You can actually keep walking up to the top but it’s a hard walk. Head down to the other side and explore the rocks.
The rocks on both sides of the beach are perfect for exploring at low tide. Climb to the top of the hill and you’ll see some pretty cool views from either side of the beach as well.
There are also walks starting on both sides of the beach. To the south, there is the Bream Head Trail and on the north you can walk along Kauri Mountain Beach. Both are long but stunning walks if you’re up for it.
There are public toilets near the car park and it’s a short 2-minute walk to the beach.
Bring a packed lunch and spend the day here, there aren’t any shops around.
Freedom camping allowed in allocated spots.

It’s a bit of a drive out of the Whangarei township but it’s well worth the drive for a beach like this.

Even though it was a cold day, the kids were all too eager to get into the water and ride along the waves.
If you go for a walk up the hill on the right you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view. Perfect for exploring. There are longer walks to the top but it takes a few hours.
Conclusion
Ocean Beach in Whangarei is a great day trip for the family. There’s plenty of space to lay out your beach towel and relax by the water’s edge or set off on an adventure and see what you discover. We personally love this beach and will definitely be back to visit!
