About | Opononi Sand Dunes
The Opononi Sand Dunes are located on the northern side of the Hokianga Harbour and is a great family activity, especially for the older kids. The sand dunes are huge and one of the most popular things to do in Hokianga.
There’s two ways to reach the Opononi Sand Dunes, either from the other side of the Hokianga Harbour by boat (the more popular option for tourists). Or drive 15kms along the beach from Mitimiti.
If you’re on the south side of the harbour you’ll be hopping on the Hokianga Express Charters for a short boat ride to the other side. The friendly boat driver will fill you in on everything you need to know and also let you borrow a boogie board for free. Once you have a boogie board in hand you’re all ready to go. Walk to the top and slide on down, straight into the water if the tide is high! It’s so much fun.
If you venture further up you’ll be able to see some cool sand sculptures and massive sand canyons. The walk takes about 1.5 – 3 hours. Overcast days are good days to visit as it can get hot out there (there’s no shelter), especially if you’re walking around a lot. Bring plenty of water and food, sunblock and a hat. There’s nothing out there so bring everything you need and make the most of it.

Wait for the boat to come at the wharf. There were people enjoying a swim not far from the wharf.
After applying some sunscreen we set off. The boat driver was super friendly and told us everything we needed to know.
On the other side and by the big sand dunes we were given a few boards to enjoy our day.
