About | Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach is a black sand beach, popular for swimming, surfing and fishing and dog walking. You can also drive along the beach at low tide and over the dunes, the tracks can get very narrow though and there are quite a few of them winding through each other, don’t lose your way!
There are toilets and a cafe close by.

Beach
We had arrived at a stunning black sand beach with only a few locals walking along it. With offshore winds, it was a bit nippy, so thankfully we had brought our jackets. We couldn’t wait to get down to the beach!
Sand dunes
We came at low tide so we were able to drive along this beautifully wild beach. At the end, you’ll find the entrance to the Waikato River and a few people fishing.
We headed into the sand dunes, the tracks were narrow so we went slow but it still scratched the ute in a few places. You can also lose your way back pretty fast as there’s heaps of little tracks winding through the place, be careful if you don’t know the place well.
The view from here was pretty incredible and we had the place to ourself!
We found a good sand dune, quickly brought out the boogie boards and rode down it. If you’re looking for better sand dunes though – head to the other side.
Rocky coastline
To end our time here we parked up and walked along the rocks, finding lots of interesting creatures along the way.
We really enjoyed our day here, there’s rocks, beach, sand dunes and off-roading all in one place in a small beach town.
