About | Te Arai Beach

If you happen to be in Auckland over the summer and you’re looking for a good family beach day, this is the spot for you. Te Arai Beach is simply beautiful and has something for everyone. It marks the end of Auckland, the border is cut right through the middle of the long stretch of sand, walk more up the beach and you’ll actually be stepping into sunny Northland.

Te Arai is one of my favourite New Zealand beaches. In fact, it was rated as one of the top 10 beaches in New Zealand. In the summertime the water is irresistible. Crystal clear, it’s perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Head over to the old quarry hole lagoon where you can jump from the cliff or walk to the top of the hill, soak in the sea air and views. It’s the perfect spot for swimming.

For the boogie board lovers, head straight down to the beach. The beach is popular with both boogie boarders and surfers. If you want to give surfing a go, this is a great spot to learn. Get some family surf lessons or if you haven’t brought a board you can hire one.

There are good walking tracks in the area. Walk over the headland of Te Arai Point and check out the amazing views of the coastline.

There are campgrounds behind the dunes but because it doesn’t have any facilities they have strict rules – only self-contained motorhomes allowed (no tents).

Te Arai is home to a few endangered birds – no dogs are allowed.

There are some toilets but nothing else, grab some lunch before you go or bring a picnic.
