About | Tokaanu Thermal Pools
The Tokaanu Thermal Pools is a small thermal pool complex close to the bottom of Lake Taupo and Ruapehu. Perfect for warming up those muscles after a day on the mount, you’ll be sure to sleep well.
There are two pools, one large public pool heated to 36°C- 38°C and a small kids pool at 36°C. There are also 12 family-sized private natural mineral pools, heated from 39°C-41°C which are available to hire.
Alongside the Tokaanu Thermal Pools is a 20-minute free thermal bushwalk that is worth checking out while you’re there. You’ll see steaming hot mineral pools and spluttering mud pots. Pushchair and wheelchair accessible.
You’ll also see a bridge that crosses the Tokaanu stream at the entrance of the pools. Have a look down and see if you can see any Rainbow trout. Throw them some food if you’ve got any leftover if you’ve been to the Tongariro National Trout Centre a few minutes away.
The thermal stream has been recognised for generations for its healing powers. The people of a local Māori tribe have lived alongside the Tokaanu Stream and thermal area since the 16th century. To this day they use the thermal stream and steam for cooking and dyeing of traditional clothing.
Open every day, 10.00am – 9.00pm except Christmas day.

Tokaanu Thermal Pools
The thermal pools quickly warmed us up after a day at the snowy mount, the large pool was warm and toasty!
Other than one person, we pretty much had the place to ourselves! We left feeling a lot more relaxed.
Thermal Walk
The thermal walk was nice, flat and easy. It was quite cool seeing all of the different bubbling pools of water and even a bit of bubbling mud, and the steam rising up.
