About | Whangarei Quarry Gardens

If you love gardens then the Whangarei Quarry Gardens is not to be missed. Beautiful and tranquil, it’s a relaxing way to end the day and wind the kids down. Go for a stroll (it’ll take just over an hour or even more so give yourself enough time) and see the five senses garden, bromeliad garden, fragrant camellia garden and the arid garden. You’ll also find concrete foundations, walls, tunnels and steel fittings left behind from the quarry nestled in between the gardens. The gardens also have over 100 sculptures created by local artists.

Once a fully operational stone quarry from 1940 to 1974, this old and run-down quarry site has been transformed into the stunning Whangarei Quarry Gardens by amazing volunteers and has been a labour of love for the last 20 years.

Entry to the gardens is through the Visitor Centre. A donation is all that is required. Grab a map and some refreshments from the Quail Cafe.

Golf cart tours available – 1 hour guided tour for up to five people. This would be great for people who can’t manage the tracks that well. Learn the history of the site as you enjoy the beautiful gardens.

No dogs, smoking or alcohol permitted.

Okay, so we thought that these gardens we absolutely amazing but we didn’t have nearly enough time to explore enough of it. We had made plans to have dinner with friends and thought we’d drop in here beforehand and check it out. We just didn’t have enough time though and though we did check out a good part of it we would have liked to have gone at more of a slower pace and seen more of it.

I love heading outdoors at this time! The heat of the day is over and there’s this wonderful fresh feeling that comes with being in the forest at this time, it’s a relaxing way to end the day.
