About | Arataki Visitor Centre

The Arataki Visitor Centre is the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges. If you’re new to the area, what better way to start if off on the right foot. When you walk into the Arataki Visitor Centre you’ll be greeted by a splendid sight, stunning views looking over Auckland.

The building in itself is something to see, with a huge 11-metre Maori post in the front of it. Inside, there are reading nooks, information brochures, water and coffee machines. Grab something to drink and some reading material as you enjoy the views.

Even if it’s a cold day, head inside for some colouring in, New Zealand kids books, games and lots of fun facts and information about New Zealand forests. There’s also stick insects and geckos, have fun spotting them!

Downstairs, they have a little movie to introduce you to the area. Close the doors, push the button to get it started and settle in as you watch a short clip showing you what’s on offer.

If you’re unsure of what walk you should start off on, come and talk to one of the friendly staff who will guide you to the right track for you and your family. With friendly and knowledgeable staff, this is a great place to stop in if you have any questions.

There’s also a small gift shop area if you still haven’t brought that kiwi souvenir you’ve been meaning to do.

Weta are huge crickets – some are the largest in the world! We love checking out these Weta boxes where we can easily view them.

We came to Arataki Centre on a cold day so after a quick look at the views, inside we went.

Then they ended up here, in the kid’s corner where they didn’t want to leave.
