About | Matapouri Beach

Matapouri is a beautiful white sand beach with clear water and beautiful surroundings. It’s nice and sheltered, making it ideal for swimming or bring the boogie board and ride along the small waves.

There’s also an estuary round back providing safe swimming and a bridge to jump off at high tide. Boats under 5.5m can be launched here. If you’ve got a bigger boat, there’s a concrete ramp in Tutukaka.

There are toilets by the parking on Wehiwehi Road.

There’s a local dairy on the main road that does takeaways and ice creams.

Walks:

Matapouri is also very popular for the mermaid pools, which can be walked to along a track starting from the northern side of the beach. You’ll need to go at low tide and bring your shoes, you’ll have to walk over sharp rocks on the other side.

From Matapouri you are also able to walk over to Whale Bay. It’s a 40-minute one-way track. If you don’t have time to walk you can drive closer to it.

For a longer walk, try the Tane Moana track which starts on Clements Road. It’s a two-hour track (4 hours return) taking you to the east coast’s largest remaining kauri, with a circumference of 11 meters.
