About | Kohuroa Stream Track (at Matheson Bay Reserve)

Matheson Bay

As soon as you park the car, the kids will be jumping out of the car to play on the playground or out exploring the beach. It’s a beautiful little bay and being sheltered by the reef and island from the ocean it makes for great swimming. A swimming pontoon comes out in the summer months and is great for jumping off.

If you’re not swimming, enjoy some time along the beach, building sandcastles, reading a good book or exploring the rockpools along Daniel’s Reef at low tide. Bring some food and supplies and spend a good day at the beach. Head up to the dairy to restock or to grab a cool drink or ice cream if you need.

Kohuroa Stream Track

While you’re there, you might notice people wandering in the opposite direction of the beach and disappearing into the bush. Shhh. There’s a secret little gem, hidden in the bush and waiting to be discovered if you’re up for a little walk. As you head into the bush, you’re blanketed by trees such as rimu, totara, kauri, kahikatea, nikau and pohutukawa. Tree identification signs help you identify some of our common native trees if you’re unfamiliar with them.

The boardwalk takes you up and along the gentle stream which later turns into a series of cascades with a few swimming spots to choose from – or jump in from the rope swing!

Surrounded by nature, the water is a little on the colder side but it’s nice and refreshing on a hot day. The kids will love exploring the stream and getting wet so bring a towel and togs. There are a good few steps along the way but it’s short and sweet and the destination is well worth it!

You can stop and enjoy the waterfalls, otherwise the track continues on and comes out at Leigh Road. Return the way you came or loop back around along the road.

Vehicle access gates are locked at night.

Time: Easy, 30 – 40min return walk.

Track entrance: The track starts on the west side of the Kohuroa Stream, along the flat grassy area and into the bush.

Toilets: toilets and changing rooms are by the carpark, as well as an outdoor cold shower.

We arrived at Matheson Bay after walking the Ti Point Coastal Walkway, and were looking for a bit of downtime so hit the playground and got our packed lunch out while enjoying the views. Coming during the week, the place was quite empty and we enjoyed the peacefulness.

After a bit of rest, we were ready to go for a little explore so into the bush we went. The boys are interested and getting better at identifying native trees and as we walked they pointed out the ones they knew and the tree identification signs along the way helped with the ones they didn’t.

As we moved further up into the bush, we passed lots of little and big waterfalls and with it a few swimming spots. If it were a little warmer, the kids would have been eager to jump right on in. It’s a really sweet little walk and really worth doing and even though we didn’t jump in this time, the kids still got to put their feet in and have a play.
