About | Marokopa Falls

This is such a short and easy walk to the Marokopa Falls but with such big rewards. The 35-metre high waterfall is huge and powerful and so majestic in the early morning light. It’s been described as one of New Zealand’s most beautiful waterfalls.

The 20-minute return walk will take you through a beautiful forest and end at a wooden platform overlooking the impressive falls.

The Marokopa Falls are just 29kms from the Waitomo Caves, which a lot of people visit for the glow worm caves, but if you’re in the area, come check this one out too. It’s well worth the extra drive.

There are two other short walks only minutes away that are worth stopping for as well. The Mangapohue Natural Bridge walk takes you under a limestone 17m natural bridge and the Piripiri Cave Walk takes you down some stairs and into a cave.

We came on a cold winter morning but a little walk through this forest sure did have us feeling more refreshed after being on the road for a few hours. The Marokopa Falls were just amazing, this is probably the most impressive waterfall we’ve seen. You could hear it while walking in, it was that powerful.

I’ve seen people post photos of them right next to the falls, even climbing up to the big rocks just beneath it. There’s a small track next to the viewing platform that goes down to the base of the waterfall, but I believe there was also a sign saying that it was dangerous to go so close to the waterfall because of strong currents, also. It was far too muddy on the day we went for us to even consider it.
