About | Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve

Come explore Fort Takapuna, a lookout point and bunker defence site created in the 1800s to protect Auckland from a potential Russian invasion. While you wander around you’ll be able to see barracks, tunnels and gun pits. You can discover more from the information panels there. You’ll also enjoy the stunning views over the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto Island.

From the top of the cliff, you might be able to find a rather undercover track heading down to the beach. It’s a great place to discover and explore the rock pools at low tide or take a picnic and watch boats, ferries and kayakers going by.

If you liked this place, you’ll also love North Head Historic Reserve, it’s less than ten minutes away and you’ll love walking through the tunnels, just remember to bring your torch!

This is also a Kiwi Guardians spot, so if you’re interested in this, don’t forget to bring your map!

It was cool looking through the windows and gates of buildings and wondering what it used to look like back in the 1800s.
