About | Maraetotara Falls

Maraetotara Falls is a spectacular 15-metre waterfall and a popular summer spot.

There are three parking spots along Maraetotara Road that lead you to the falls, the first one takes about ten or fifteen minutes and the closest one will only be a quick walk down the hill that will take you less than 2 minutes.

If you’d rather not get wet, park the car at the first carpark and go for a short walk along the Maraetotara Historic Walk where you’ll discover the remains of an old power station and walk along the beautiful river. The track is an easy 15-minute walk and great for kids! It then ends at the beautiful Maraetotara Falls, what a treat!

This quickly becomes the local hotspot during summer and is a popular way to cool down. There’s a great swimming hole at the base of the waterfall so don’t forget your togs and towel!

Facilities: there are no facilities there.

Overnight camping: for self-contained vehicles, it is allowed for a maximum of 2 nights.

We were pretty happy with ourselves to have found such a peaceful and beautiful location, the falls were so pretty! It was fun exploring the place, we came out first at the top of the waterfall and had to walk over a large pipe to get down to the base. There was a great tree for the kids to climb and we enjoyed following the river downstream for a little bit – very tranquil and lovely.

A very cute place, could definitely see this becoming our spot if we visited in summer (we came late autumn when the water was cold)!

We wandered further down the track and it seemed like such a sweet little walk – right by the beautiful stream. Because it was a rather spontaneous stop for us, the kids were rather eager to head back as we were on our way to grab lunch, but definitely planning for a longer stay next time!
