About | Te Mata Peak

Te Mata Peak stands 399m above sea level and gives a wonderful 360-degree view of Hawkes Bay. On a clear day, you might even be able to see all the way out to Mount Ruapehu. It’s simply stunning and as you’re taking in the view, peace washes over you and there’s nowhere else you want to be. It’s so easy to get lost in the beautiful scenery but keep a close eye on the kids as there are steep cliffs that don’t have barriers. If you’re in the area, this has to be one of the things you’ve just got to do. It will quickly become the highlight of the trip.

There are so many great walking and biking tracks on the mountain but you’ll want to be careful around here – it’s steep. The walk up is hard but it’ll all be worth it when you’re rewarded with amazing views high above the rolling hills and the township below. Check the difficulty of the walk before you go, some will have you climbing up some tough areas. The Redwood Forest is a favourite.

You can drive right up to the top of the mountain but if you have an adventurous and active family, walking up may be the choice for you. There’ll be a parking area at the bottom. There’s a map of the tracks and toilets. Take the yellow route if you’re not really sure if the kids will be able to do it – the slopes are more gentle and there are several resting places along the way.

The road up the mountain is narrow so if you’re taking the car, drive up slowly. You’ll also be sharing the road with walkers and runners.

Don’t forget your sunscreen if you’re be spending some time at the top of the mountain – there aren’t many trees to find shade under.

There are public toilets at the main gates.

Don’t look down! If you can see those tiny white dots – those are sheep! So far up, you’ll want to supervise your children closely and don’t get too close to the edge.

We just love Te Mata Peak, the views are just unbeatable. It’s one of those places that no matter how many times you visit, each visit is just as breathtaking as the last.
