About | Taranaki Falls

2-hour return track, 6km.

The 20-metre Taranaki Falls is a fascinating walk with a range of landforms and mountain views. It’s quite an easy track without too many inclines. Beautiful views of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe can be seen. Walk past the beautiful Wairere Stream, past Cascade Falls to end up at the spectacular Taranaki Falls.

I was really excited about doing this walk, I had already fallen in love with the Tongariro area and knew the Taranaki Falls walk was going to be a good one. As soon as we saw this creek, we were in love and couldn’t stop the kids from getting in (and inevitably getting wet).

Heading back

Because the kids ended up going into the freezing cold water, their feet were too cold to finish the walk, someone needed to go to the toilet and we ended up turning around (so I’ve just added a photo of the waterfall instead). Disappointed that we didn’t finish it but these things happen and I know we’ll be back another time. All in all, still glad we attempted it!
