About | Trounson Kauri Park

The Trounson Kauri Park track is an easy 40-minute walk through an ancient forest full of huge kauri trees. One after the other, it just never ends. It’s truly remarkable to see these trees still standing strong.

Night tours are also available. This would be a great way to learn more about the place, the guide is very informative and you’ll learn more about the flora and nightlife. This could be your best chance of seeing a wild kiwi in the wild, and not many New Zealanders can say they’ve seen one. Listen for the kiwi’s distinctive kee-wee and the morepork’s call. The kids will love staying up after dark for this and venturing into the forest in search of a kiwi. Remember to stay quiet!

If you visit during the night or the day it’s sure to be a remarkable walk. Take your time to really take in this truly majestic and ancient forest.

Listen and look up and you might be able to spot one of New Zealand’s birds. The Kūkupa (New Zealand pigeon), North Island brown kiwi, fantails, pied tits and other forest birds are residents here.

There is a small campground for tents and motorhomes.

Please stay on the track at all times to protect our native kauri trees from dying.

No dogs or hunting allowed.

Spotting such a big kauri tree was pretty fantastic, here in this beautiful native forest. But they just kept popping up, around each bend. It was so good seeing them, we never got tired of spotting yet another huge kauri, standing there thousands of years before us! Please stay on the track so that these trees will still be here for years to come.
